Welcome to Byrne Urban Scholars
HARD FACTS
One student drops out of high school every nine seconds in America.
In Denver, 37% of all high school students drop out.
Colorado ranks 49th out of 50 states with the highest percentage of teens that are high school drop outs.
BIG POTENTIAL
For many high school students, staying in school isn’t an easy choice. Especially if they live in a neighborhood where poverty, drugs, violence, crime and gangs are the norm; if their home life is unstable; or if they have little hope for the future. In fact, 37% of Denver’s high school students just drop out. They find it easier to give up on school, and in the end, on themselves.
At Byrne Urban Scholars, we believe there’s a graduate waiting to be found in all students. That’s why our primary goal is to help each Urban Scholar earn a high school diploma from one of Denver’s private high schools. With a diploma, our scholars have the opportunity to go to college, get better jobs and lead more productive lives.
ROCK-SOLID SUPPORT
Byrne Urban Scholars identifies students who have potential, but are at risk of getting lost in the current system. With all the challenges these students face, we believe that paying for a good education shouldn’t be an additional burden. After acceptance in our program, each Byrne scholar receives full or partial tuition assistance, mentoring, tutoring, and case management.
SUPPORT
Our trained mentors and highly qualified case managers support and supervise each scholar by forging partnerships with the scholar’s families, teachers and other non-profits in the community to ensure success.
We are currently looking for adult volunteers to serve as mentors for our incoming class of students. You CAN make a difference in the life of a youth! Contact Susan Whittle Duncombe at

ADVOCATE
A scholar’s mentor and case manager act as his or her dedicated advocate for graduation and counsel the scholar in all aspects of life.
INSPIRE
Each Byrne Urban Scholar has a team of caring people who enthusiastically engages that scholar, helps create a future life plan and opens the door to what’s possible with a high school diploma and the drive to succeed.
